Videoing with the Canon R5C

Using the Canon R5C with a battery grip sporting the EF70-200mm lens and handgrip with the Tascam Sound adaptor and a Rode shotgun mic and a wireless lapel mic. Quite a lot for a very basic setup.

Closeup on a Vibrating String

Using a strobe to fix a string so that the eye can see it is one thing, but it is another to do this so that the camera can see the string in the same way. We found the best way was using a phone.

Count down Timer

After a lot of effort from my son we now have a working countdown timer in the Hyperdeck Shuttle to use before live broadcasts. The render time was high at about 3 hours but now done it is really easy to use and configure.

Pasco light producing ray diagrams online

One of hardest things to do is teaching ray diagrams online. The light levels need to be low so that the student can see what is going on so the studio lights have to go off. The cameras  work at low light levels so the student can literally see in the dark.

1500 Downloads

The graphic says it all. The Going Green Podcast is working and being downloaded, as well as many time more of the video of the podcast.

Balancing equations

Balancing chemical equations doesn’t have to be like this, but it certainly does work

Look into the camera

I find it hard looking into the camera. I prefer to talking to people rather than staring into a lens. I find it hard to train myself to look into the lens rather than looking at a screen.

Recreating the past

We made a video a while ago but somehow it got a little lost in the filing system, so when it showed up and a bit was missing we needed to recreate the scene so that a missing part could be slotted in.

No Power No Internet No Lessons?

Power Cut - Can I manage to continue? Yes the laptop is on battery.  The routers on UPS. No Internet Virgin Media down for a few hours. But the backup Internet is still there using 4Com. We can survive it just takes a few minutes to configure.

Can students improve

I meet some teachers that say that students cannot improve. But those are the one's who don't work with the students to find their weaknesses and turn them into strengths. The good teachers are those that not just let students blossom, but those who prepare the roots well.

Pistol Grip on 70-200 telephoto lens

The 70-200mm f2.8 lens is quite heavy for handheld photos and video especially once we add on a battery case the Tascam XLR adaptor and microphones on the R5C, so adding this pistol grip to the lens really does make a difference

Filming Outside

When we film some experiments we have to do this outside. Sometimes it is better to do the filming outside the front of the house then as we film many of the passers-by stop and watch and take interest in the experiments

Momentum

Investigating Momentum using a couple of @Pascoscientific Smart carts and a couple of ordinary carts and using Capstone to record the events when two carts collide. 1:1 is easy for the students but more makes it more interesting to predict the changes.

Filming the Pasco Metre torque Kit

Trying to get in close and panning using the DJI Ronin and the Arsenal camera controller to obtain smooth time lapsed panning along the @pascoscientific metre stick torque kit

Copying Files

My least favourite job in film making. Copying all the files from each camera (usually 3 or 4) onto the server for editing.

Mac Studio or PC

My PC is getting old. Do I replace it with a Mac Studio which can run Black Magic Davinci Resolve really fast or do I stick with what I know with a PC which won't be quite as fast, but is more familiar. Decisions to make.

Adapalux

Designed for macrophotography the @adaptalux lights are also great for other types of illumination and getting into those little places to provide good light so you can see clearly. Having used them for a few years now, we don't know what we would do without them.

Sunday 12 June 2022

Glass photography

Being transparent, glass is exceedingly hard to photograph and that's where good lighting is required to make the object stand out. We are using @Adaptalux lights to try to make the glassware stand out when we produce videos and photographs.

Two Ronins

Using two Ronins to follow me around, at different angles It means I can do some of the filming and being in the film at the same time, which is useful when other members of the team are busy doing other things.

Ready to work

All the computers turned on, Wacom tablet ready, Davinci Resolve loading, cameras on and the visualiser initialised. Thank goodness for solar panels, generating all the electricity we are using.

Taking remote photos

Using a gimbal and Arsenal to take remote photos. This seems to be ideal when there is only one person doing some thing and you need a photo of you doing it. Sometimes working in a small group doesn't have any disadvantages.

Can we teach without paper but still write?

Can we do without paper? Can we use Wacom tablets and write on tests, and papers, or use an Ipad or Android tablet to hand write notes. Looking into these and others to trial to see the students like best and work seamlessly.

Making boring interesting

How do you make teaching accountancy software seem like fun and interesting as well as educational. It doesn't matter the subject. Its a challenge we all have to look at in all the teaching that we do, to make the boring, and humdrum interesting and entertaining.

Monday 6 June 2022

A different sort of video

One of the good things about making videos is that you get all types of things to film about- some of which you know lots about and some that you don't. This one involved using long lenses to be far enough away.

Using Chemix as a basis for design and animation

I have a seen others using @ChemixLab to make some images and then using extra frames animate them. When you need other unavailable objects then some other software can bring in images to create what you need.

Delivery Tubes

Making some delivery tubes to carry out an experiment. Often done by the technician, but I get the students to do this. They appreciate the work done the technician and also learn something as well

Wash bottle change

The wash bottles sterile saline was expired so time to change them after their 5 years of no use. I have only used one in 40 years of teaching and when you need one - you really need it.

Learning to use the calculator

The Casio fx-CG50 is a very powerful calculator and many of the students have one, its just that they don't know how to use it, so it is lesson time to get the most out of the calculator with videos from the web and practical experience.
